Because of Camp...

In January of  2019, my world turned upside down. Three young children showed up on my doorstep looking for a home away from home. Their worlds, however, had been turning upside down for years. After experiencing years of trauma and abuse, they had officially entered into foster care. They each came with a pillowcase filled with a few of their belongings and a heart racing with anticipation and fear.

They soon became comfortable within the walls of my home as we rode the roller coaster of foster care together. We endured the highest of highs and the lowest of lows together. That spring I signed all three of them up for a spring retreat at Camp Horizon and their eyes opened wide as we drove up Horizon Drive for the first time.

There is no way I could have anticipated the impact that weekend had on their lives. They had never slept in a cabin, never gone on a hike, never even seen an ant hill. These are experiences that many of us take for granted but seem to transport these kids into a whole new world. Not only were they introduced to adventure, but they were also introduced to a community of Believers who have continued to shape their minds, hearts, and lives for many years since.

Between winter retreats, weekend visits, and summer camp, my kids have made lifelong memories that they will forever cherish. Camp Horizon has a way of not only introducing children to who God is but also has a way of allowing them to feel God’s presence in an entirely different way every time they drive up the familiar road. The counselors do a wonderful job at connecting with children from different backgrounds, meeting them where they are, and walking alongside them every step of the way. Growing up with a childhood full of trauma, knowing and feeling the love of God - and even that of people - was so foreign to them but now it offers a newfound peace and comfort.

Because of Camp, they have been pushed out of their comfort zone in a safe place.

Because of Camp, they have more friendship bracelets than I can count.

Because of Camp, they have learned about and felt the lovingkindness of God.

Because of Camp, they have become friends with children who they never would have crossed paths with before.

Because of Camp, they have a new love for Walking Tacos.

Because of Camp, they have learned Who they can turn to during times of trial.

Because of Camp, they have a home away from home… away from home.
